Culinária
A gastronomia de S.Nicolau é rica em tradição. A sua especialidade é o “Modje São Nicolau”, um caldo de carne cabrito capado e legumes (mandioca, banana verde, batata, abóbara, inhame, tudo cortado aos cubos). Este prato é muito utilizado nas festas de casamentos, onde é aompanhado com “xerém” feito a partir de milho. Destacam-se também pratos como a “Cachupa Rica” considerado o prato nacional, “Caldo de Peixe”, “Xerém”, “Cuscuz”, “Ralon” “Papas de milho moído servidas com leite”, “Milho em Grão” e “Farinha de Pau” (farinha de mandioca), assim como diversos pratos de peixe sempre fresco e saboroso, sem esquecer os mariscos e o atum enlatado que é de grande qualidade.
Nos restaurantes e bares são servidos pequenas porções de marisco conhecidas como “bafas”, muitas vezes como entradas ou petiscos.
Bebidas tradicionais
A aguardente ou grogue de São Nicolau, o famoso “Grogue Terra”, é a bebida mais tradicional em S.Nicolau. Confeccionado a partir de cana-de-açúcar, é de elevada qualidade e muito apreciado, tornando-se num produto muito requisitado por todos aqueles que visitam a ilha de São Nicolau e não só.
O “pontche” e outros licores também ajudam a compor o menu de bebidas tradicionais de S. Nicolau e do município da Ribeira Brava em particular.
Existe uma grande variedade de chás de plantas aromáticas, que muitas vezes são utilizados para fins medicinais.
Doces tradicionais
Os doces tradicionais como o de goiaba, papaia, coco, batata-doce, abóbara, leite, entre outros, merecem destaque especial. Os bolos têm um espaço importante, assim como o queijo branco de cabra.
