A prática desportiva é hoje uma questão de formação, de saúde e de cidadania. De formação pelo seu papel ao nível da formação de crianças, jovens e adultos, em termos de estimulação e desenvolvimento das suas capacidades motoras, sócio-afectivas e cognitivas. De saúde face ao papel que o movimento assume na nossa vida e à necessidade de manter um estilo de vida activo que se ganha pelos hábitos, atitudes e práticas adquiridas. De cidadania porque é o Desporto que pode proporcionar a todas as crianças, jovens e adultos uma diversidade de actividades físicas e desportivas. É a partir das actividades desportivas, que todos os cidadãos realizam aprendizagens que os fazem gostar, desejar aprender mais e vincular a uma prática desportiva regular ao longo da vida. A importância social e cultural das actividades físicas e desportivas exige condições para que todos acedam, independentemente das suas características individuais e sociais.
Assim, a Câmara Municipal da Ribeira Brava no âmbito das competências atribuídas ao poder local que objectivam a sua autonomia, tem por finalidade promover o desporto e a actividade física junto das populações.

- Pavilhão Desportivo e Piscina Municipal;
- Vedação das placas desportivas;
- Melhoramento de pisos e vedação dos campos de futebol nas diversas localidades;
- Apoiar os Clubes e Associações desportivas;
- Incrementar a prática de outras modalidades, tais como o Basquetebol, Voleibol, Atletismo, Ciclismo;
- Apoiar iniciativas Desportivas a nível das Escolas;
- Aquisição de equipamentos desportivos.
