O ministro do Ambiente, Habitação e Ordenamento do Território, Antero Veiga, disse por ocasião da sua visita à dessalinizadora de Preguiça que investimentos do género traz um sentimento de realização e dá mostra de que é possível debelar o problema de falta de água, nesse concreto no município da Ribeira Brava.
O ministro está crente de que a capacidade da unidade dessalinizadora em produzir cerce de 1200 mil metros cúbicos de água por dia, assim que entrar em funcionamento, vai permitir que todos usufruam deste bem precioso.
Outro ponto realçado pelo ministro é que essa água vai acarretar um preço justo aos consumidores, isto graças às novas tecnologias.
Na sua visita à dessalinizadora, Antero Veiga esteve acompanhado do presidente da Câmara Municipal, Américo Nascimento e do delegado do Ministério do Desenvolvimento Rural em São Nicolau, Adilson Melício.
A unidade dessalinizadora está localizada junto ao mar na zona de Preguiça e a água vai ser retirada de um dos dois furos junto ao mar, o que permite reduzir a salinidade e diminuir os custos de manutenção.
Vai produzir, diariamente, 1.200 metros cúbicos de água em duas estações de bombagem, uma junto ao dessalinizador, que levará a água até à localidade do Caleijão e de lá para a cidade da Ribeira Brava e arredores do município.
A outra estação de bombagem levará água a uma rota de mais de 600 metros que, por gravidade, vai abastecer o concelho do Tarrafal.
Segundo o delegado do MDR, a produção de água, numa primeira fase, vai ser "suficiente para as populações". Em termos agrícolas, Adilson Melício garante que vão ser alcançados resultados excepcionais", uma vez que, actualmente, a água usada para o consumo doméstico provém de furos e de nascentes, que depois já poderá ser destinada à agricultura.
Para a comunidade piscatória de Preguiça defende que se desenham novas perspectivas de actividades geradoras de rendimento através da agricultura com o sistema de rega gota-a-gota.
A infraestrutura que já está na sua fase final, faltando apenas a conclusão da ligação de água entre as estações de bombagens, é financiada pelo Fundo India, Brasil e África do Sul (IBSA) através do Sistema das Nações Unidas.
