A cultura é hoje um bem essencial.
No município da Ribeira Brava a cultura faz-se do consumo de produtos culturais locais e de outras ilhas mais ou menos regular e diversificada nos diversos espaços culturais. Mas a cultura é também o fazer, o participar, o estar envolvido em projectos que passam pelo cinema, a música, o teatro, a dança, a literatura, gastronomia, etc. Muita dessa actividade passa pelo trabalho associativo que tem um papel fundamental no fortalecimento do tecido social, pois faz-se do envolvimento e da participação das pessoas, ajudando a criar na comunidade sentimentos de pertença. Manter uma actividade cultural regular e diversificada e apoiar o movimento associativo nas suas diversas facetas são os dois pilares fundamentais da política cultural da Câmara Municipal da Ribeira Brava.
Música – A música é uma das manifestações culturais de maior referência. Muitos músicos de Cabo Verde são originários de S. Nicolau destacando-se o compositor e músico Paulino Vieira, considerado um dos melhores músicos da actualidade cabo-verdiana.
Quanto à música tradicional, ela é muito ligada à vivência e tradições da ilha desde composições cujas letras retratam a vida no campo, passando por composições viradas para os festejos tradicionais como os casamentos, festas de romaria, carnaval e outros.
Literatura – A obra literária mais importante da história da ilha é o Romance “CHIQUINHO” do professor Baltasar Lopes da Silva.
Artesanato – O artesanato é uma manifestação bem presente na ilha, particularmente no domínio da cestaria e trabalhos produzidos a partir do uso da “palha” e do “cariço”. Igualmente a produção das rendas e bordados constitui uma referência na produção artesanal nacional.
Dança – Na dança destaca-se a mazurca e contradança.
Gastronomia – A gastronomia ocupa um lugar de referência na cultura do município e de S.Nicolau, destacando-se pratos tradicionais como a cachupa e o modje.
Projectos
- Estabelecer parcerias para realização de feiras culturais;
- Promover acções de formação nas diversas áreas como teatro, musica, dança artes plásticas etc.
- Apoiar a realização de festivais;
- Incentivar os artistas não residentes a lançarem os seus trabalhos no Município;
- Promover concursos no seio dos jovens, a nível da música, cultura geral, etc.
- Elaborar um projecto cultural para a Ex-Irmandade em parceria com os centros culturais existentes no país.
